Workshops

Communicating should be simple: Keep your writing concise, focused and targeted. Readers shouldn’t have to guess at your main point, and your supporting evidence should be easy to understand if you want to persuade people.

I’m excited to work with fellow writers to make sure their writing is as effective as possible.

State Policy Network Writing Workshop
Arlington, Virginia

Policy experts and analysts are a bright bunch, but have one major problem in common when it comes to writing: They’re heavy on wonk and jargon, not people speak. These workshops focused on giving policy analysts the knowledge and mindset they need to explain their issues to readers, with the additional goal of persuading readers why a particular policy solution is best.

Training included:

  • Personalized feedback on each attendee’s writing samples
  • Writing 101 training: How to structure a blog to get maximum readership and clarity
  • Rigorous, real-world exercises that hammer home writing lessons
  • An opportunity for big-picture reflection: Why do you write and what are you trying to accomplish?
  • Application of new skills to specific campaigns, assistance with messaging and coming up with blog topics

The Shift: Writing for the web seminar
Jan. 7, 2015

Worked with local Chicago writers looking to gain readers and write clearer, more compelling content. This one-hour seminar focused on practical takeaways writers can apply to their work, including how to write a good lede (opening sentence), craft a solid nut graph (explanatory paragraph) and structure a successful article. Held at The Shift, a co-working space in Uptown.
